Looking and Seeing: On the Abilities of Primates to Detect the Gaze and Attribute Visual Attention

چکیده

Vision is probably one of the most important functions of advanced organisms. When we look at objects, we not only detect their physical parameters but also are able to think about these objects and make complex conclusions. When we see another person looking somewhere, we are also able to understand that he or she focuses on some object and probably thinks about that. To what extent primates’ vision is similar to ours? In other words, are they able to perceive others looking and understand what they are looking at? This work attempts to address the argument about the existence of gaze detection in primates. I subject to critical analysis the most well known scientific papers in the field of primatology as well as provide parallels with the studies of human gaze. In order to understand the concept of gaze I will distinguish between gaze and visual attention and pr ovide definitions of both concepts drawn from what we know about “gaze” as humans. Generally, I will try to answer and expand some of the questions posed by Keeley [1]. In particular I will address the question “Is it true that some animals follow gaze without attributing mental states to others?”

Orienting of Attention to Gaze Direction Cues in Rhesus Macaques: Species-Specificity, and Effects of Cue Motion and Reward Predictiveness

Primates live in complex social groups and rely on social cues to direct their attention. For example, primates react faster to an unpredictable stimulus after seeing a conspecific looking in the direction of that stimulus. In the current study we tested the specificity of facial cues (gaze direction) for orienting attention and their interaction with other cues that are known to guide attentio...

Application of eye tracking technology for screening and rehabilitation of children with special needs.

Eye tracking is a technology for measuring eye movements when looking at a point. The length of time to look at a particular situation, the sequence of observations, as well as points of attention are processed in the process of eye tracking and eye movements are identified by topics such as fixation, saccade, etc. Information about how the eyes move at a special moment has many potential appli...

Spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) follow gaze around barriers: evidence for perspective taking?

Gaze following is an adaptive skill that might have been selected in social species, such as many nonhuman primates, to obtain information about food location, predators, and social interactions. The authors investigated the ability of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) to follow the gaze of a human around barriers and the presence of "looking back" behavior. ...

Rhesus Monkeys Attribute Perceptions to Others

Paramount among human cognitive abilities is the capacity to reason about what others think, want, and see--a capacity referred to as a theory of mind (ToM). Despite its importance in human cognition, the extent to which other primates share human ToM capacities has for decades remained a mystery. To date, primates [1, 2] have performed poorly in behavioral tasks that require ToM abilities, des...
